Ingrain carpet

  • An ingrain carpet was a flat, woven, reversible wool carpet made of yarn dyed before weaving. The wool was then woven on a jacquard loom accommodating up to six colored weft threads. Ingrain carpets were popular in middle-class homes in 18th and 19th century America; in many middle class homes of the 1800s at least one room had ingrain carpet.
  • The carpet is woven in 36" wide strips, and hand seamed together
  • Usually wall-to -wall and then tacked down except for spring cleaning
