Date of Death 12/19/1971Mrs. Mary E. Hatch was widely known for her philanthropic work.
She was the wife of Chauncey R. Hatch, founder and former president of McKaig-Hatch Inc.
Mrs. Hatch often paid for surgical operations for the needy and provided burial funds for the needy or residents who died at the Erie County Home in Alden, New York. Several times a year Mrs. Hatch, the former Mary E. Fitzsimmons, would drive to the home and make soup for the residents.
For many years she personally prepared and arranged Christmas decorations for as many as 15 institutions including the Bristol Home, Ingleside home, and the Protestant Home for Children. Many referred to her as the"symbol of charity." In 1953 she was selected as one of Buffalo's outstanding citizens.She was the director of The Protestant Home For Unprotected Children until the 60s, when she was replaced by Harry Halberslaben. The Home was and still is located at 605 Niagara Street.
She was a life member and former director of the Crippled Children's Guild; the Working Boys Home; and the Buffalo Association for the Blind. She was also a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Eastern Star; Director of the 20th Century Club.
Mrs. Hatch was 86 years old, and resided in Snyder, NY, at the time of her death.
