Delaware District council member Joel Feroleto and Street artist Vinny Alejandro on Hertel Alley

...  Around that same time [last summer], I [Queenseyes] reached out to Delaware District council member Joel Feroleto, to see if there were any urban street art opportunities in North Buffalo. Feroleto has been championing the mural scene in his district, which coincided with Albright Knox’s charge to elevate the large scale mural movement in Buffalo. A couple days later, I met up with Feroleto and [Vinny ] Alejandro to walk Hertel Alley between Traymore and Colvin – the alleyway extends a number of city blocks, running parallel to Hertel. When Alejandro first scoped out the alley, he almost fell over. “This is exactly what other cities are doing,” he said. “These walls are all prime for art, and we need to incorporate a festival aspect.” Feroleto agreed, and told us that he would start talking to the building owners, and the business owners.

Street artist Vinny Alejandro

Fast forward 9 months, and the Hertel Alley Street Art Festival is born. The event, sponsored by the Hertel Business Association, will take place over the course of two days – Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2. (2019).  Alejandro is taking the lead on this festival, and told me, “It’s going to be an explosion of street art, in an alley that could use some attention – it’s not very welcoming, but after the event, people are going to want to see how vibrant it has become. We have street artists coming in from Rochester, LA, and even Nebraska – there will be 20 artists painting throughout the weekend. This is the type of event that put Philadelphia and Miami on the map for an art genre that has not existed in Buffalo until now.”

“This will transform the Hertel Alley into a destination and have a positive impact for all of North Buffalo,” said Feroleto. “Public art on Hertel has been embraced by the neighborhood and has a positive economic impact on the business.  It is also getting national recognition, as the ‘Hertel Walls’ have been mentioned as a place to visit Buffalo in national publications such as the Washington Post and Chicago Tribune.”

Delaware District council member Joel Feroleto and Street artist Vinny Alejandro on Hertel Alley

Over the weekend, upwards of 20 street artists gathered along an alley that runs parallel to Hertel (between Traymore and Colvin) to paint a massive stretch of walls. This latest art effort was the brainchild of artist Vinny Alejandro and yours truly, with the help of Delaware District Council member Joel Feroleto and the Hertel Business Association.

Along with lots of live art, there were multiple DJs throughout the course of the two days, an ice creamcycle, vendors, and tons of photo ops.

Artist Nicole Cherry, told me that, at one point during the event, a man walked up to her and handed her $100. He thanked her for beautifying the building, and walked away. Cherry told me that she couldn't believe how incredible that moment was, because the hundred bucks was going to come in very handy. After all, these artists not only donated their time to beautify the Hertel Alley walls, they also paid for their own paint!

From what I understand, there is a general consensus that this event will be repeated next year, only bigger. The alley has been transformed into an urban street gallery, thanks to local artists, and visiting artists from other states. Now that we have one event under our belt, it’s going to be even easier to attract more talents from even further away.

"Tom Holt moved to Buffalo in 2002, after finishing his art degree.  In Buffalo, the best expression of Holt’s mural style is in North Buffalo’s Hertel Art Alley, best described as not far from the Sunoco station on the corner of Hertel and Colvin Avenues. Sometimes called Oh Word in reference to the text that appears on it, it features a cat (modeled after Holt’s own pet cat) with a human body riding a skateboard, contrasted against a bright fuschia background." -
