The reinforced plaster coffered ceiling is patterned after St. Peter's at the Vatican.

Each of the members of this lucunar work (i.e., the squares, rectangle, rosettes, etc.) was molded by craftsmen on tables right in the nave. These many plaster pieces were positioned on the steel ribs of the barrel vault very shortly after they were made. They are suspended by means of excelsior and plaster, and have been formed into a well-bonded whole. (Catwalks give access to the entire "attic," dome, and lantern of the church.)
