The Lares and the Sacrifices

The Lares and the Sacrifices
The Lares, sons of Mercury and the nymph Lara, were not major deities, but within the domestic structure they were so closely related to the house that they became synonymous with it and with the hearth. They are depicted as young boys in short tunics and high shoes in the act of dancing and pouring wine from an upheld drinking horn into a bowl or bucket.

In the upper panel, the lares, the two figures on the sides with drinking horns, are pouring wine into a small bucket. They stand to either side of the sacrifice, carried out by the "genius" assisted by servants and a musician with double-flute.

In the lower panel, a pair of snakes, bringers of prosperity and abundance, have reached the offerings of  eggs placed on an altar.
