Pieta
By Michelangelo

1498–1499
Pieta: Body of Jesus on the lap of his mother Mary after the Crucifixion.
The sculpture, in Carrara marble, was made for the French cardinal Jean de Billheres's funeral monument, but was moved to its current location, the first chapel on the right as one enters the basilica, in the 18th century. It is the only piece Michelangelo ever signed.

St. Jerome is often depicted with a lion, in reference to a story telling how Jerome tamed a lion by healing its paw.

The Death of St. Sebastian

The Chapel of St. Sebastian is named after the subject of the mosaic above the altar. It was completed by Pier Paolo Cristofari (1730-36) after a drawing (1628-31) by Domenico Zampieri.

St. Sebastian is commonly depicted in art and literature tied to a post or tree.
