Buffalo's Waterfront: A Guidebook
Edited by Timothy Tielman

1990

Introduction

This guide had its beginnings in the summer of 1984. Members of the Preservation Coalition of Erie County met in an Allen Street watering hole to discuss ways of publicizing Buffalo's fascinating industrial archaeology, and by extension, preserving it. (That summer, the Cargill Electric Elevator was demolished and steel plants were facing the cutter's torch.)

The result is a modest book which is part architectural description, history, industrial archaeology, and part a book of curiosities. It looks at the High and Mighty (the 1833 lighthouse) and the ordinary (an auto crushing company). We hope it reflects the variety of the waterfront.
