John R. Oishei Foundation contributes $13.4 million to 76 not-for-profit organizations in 2001, boosting total giving to more, than $100 million since it was established in 1940.

Patricia Oishei Colby
, the last surviving daughter of John R. Oishei, dies in November. $25 million is given to the John R. Oishei Foundation from a remainder trust established for Colby by her father.


Robert Budin purchases 225 photographs by noted social documentary Buffalo photographer Milton Rogovin and donates them to the Burchfield -Penny Art Center.




September 11. Terrorists destroy the NY City Twin World Trade Center and part of the Pentagon Building in Washington DC.

Statistics about Buffalo in 2001 as reported in The Buffalo News on Nov. 20, 2001:
The Census Bureau estimates are based on a test survey of 700,000 households in more than 1,200 counties nationwide.
  • Metro Buffalo commuters take an average of 21 minutes to get to work.
  • Ten percent of the Buffalo Niagara region speaks a language other than English at home.
  • More than a quarter of Buffalo's population was living in poverty.
  • Half the region's households owned at least two cars; 13 percent had three or more parked in the driveway.
  • Two percent of area households had no phone last year.
  • Less than a half of area households are with out one of the three: running water, a working toilet and a bath tub.
  • Twelve percent of Buffalo Niagara's population was living in poverty.
  • Twenty one percent of the region's households received some kind of government assistance.
  • In Buffalo 26 percent of the population was living in poverty; 45 percent received some kind of public assistance.
  • Eighty-five percent of Buffalo Niagara residents were born in New York State.
  • Eighty-five percent of the population over 25 have high school diplomas.
  • Nearly a quarter of the population over 25 have bachelor's degrees.
  • Only 9 percent of the regions population carpool to work.

2002

Adelphia Communications Company files for bankruptcy. Planning for the construction of Adelphia's new office building in downtown Buffalo is halted.


Arthur E. Moog, founder of Moog Inc., dies at 83 in July in his home in Anna Maria, Fla. at the age of 83.

Moog confounded Moog Inc. in 1951 with his brother, William C. Moog, and served as senior vice president and a director of the company until 1969, when he retired. The company manufactures servoactuators used in the control systems of aircraft, satellites and industrial machinery.

Moog came out of retirement in 1972 when he joined Roblin 1ndustries as .a corporate vice president and president of the company's Industrial Products Group. He retired from that business in 1981.

In 1982, Moog became founding president of the Western New York Technology Development Center at UB. The center is a nonprofit corporation that links companies with researchers to stimulate the introduction of technology into products. He retired from that position in 1986.

Moog also was a cofounder of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of East Aurora.
His first wife, the former Margaret Rogers, died in 1978. Moog is survived by his second wife, the former Joan Bond.




On September 13 and 14, a few days after the one-year anniversary of the "9/11" terrorist attack in New York City and in Washington, DD, five Lackawanna Yemeni-Americans are arrested by the FBI on charges of comprising the "Buffalo Cell" of al-Qaida. The FBI alleges that the men were trained at at Osama bin Laden-run camp in Afghanistan where two of the Sept. 11 hijackers received terrorist training.



Sept. 27. M&T Bank announces a $3.1 billion deal to buy Allfirst Financial of Baltimore. This will end Buffalo's dubious distinction as being home to no Fortune 500 companies

Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway is one of the largest stockholders in M&T Bank. Berkshire Hathaway also owns The Buffalo News.

HSBC Bank USA is the size of a Fortune 500 company, with assets of $84 billion, but is a division of London-based HSBC Holdings.


Largest religious affiliation in Buffalo Niagara Region in 2002 is Catholic
