Gougework / Gouge carving
Also called: Nicking, Notch carving

A kind of gouged or notched carving (with a rounded chisel).

Formed by scooping out a pattern with semi-circular gouge

Frequent on Gothic in Spain and England, and on rails of chairs and chests of the 17th and early 18th centuries.

Contrasts with applied composition moldings (used extensively by Robert Adam)
